Intrusion Detection System

Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are dedicated appliances or software-based
components that monitor network traffic or individual computer activity
with the goals of identifying malicious actions, resource misuse, attempts to gain
unauthorized access, and attacks. There are different types of IDS systems—
host and network-based, and signature and behavior-based—which we will be
covering in the following sections.
